Chapter Twenty-One

My long soak in the tub had left me feeling sleepy. I figured coffee would keep me awake long enough to finish the first book the oldies had forced on me. Even with the caffeine, my eyes started trying to slide shut before I’d finished half a chapter. Jess was watching me expectantly, waiting for me to succumb to the boredom. Defying her, I forged ahead.

When I woke sometime later, I had a crick in my neck from falling asleep in my chair again. Straightening up with a wince, I shot a sardonic look at my bestie, daring her to say she’d been just about to wake me up. “You were sleeping so peacefully that I didn’t want to disturb you,” she said in self-defense.

Shaking my head at her, I gave up on the book for tonight and headed for bed. Knowing I had to read every book about magic that existed in the den of the Delaney mansion, I forced myself to start reading again when I had a break between clients the next morning.

“Diva!” a voice said urgently, then a hand shook my shoulder.

Snapping awake with a loud, unladylike snort, I peeled my face off the page that was stuck to my cheek and looked around wildly. “What? What’s wrong?” My fog evaporated when I saw I had visitors.

Dr. Becket frowned down at me and took his hand off my shoulder. “What happened to you?” he asked. Nina stood next to him, floury hands clutched together in worry.

“I fell asleep reading,” I said sheepishly. Jess had her hand over her mouth, stifling her snorts and giggles, not that they could hear her. At least her three ghostly cohorts hadn’t witnessed this embarrassing event.

“I came in to visit you and found you unconscious on your desk,” the baker said in a scolding tone. “You gave me such a fright that I called Dr. Becket straight away.”

“Sorry,” I said and gestured at the book. “Part of my training involves reading a bunch of old books. My brain seems to switch off as soon as I open them and I keep falling asleep.”

“At least you didn’t sustain any head injuries this time,” Dr. Becket said in disapproval at being called from his office for no good reason.

“Thanks for checking on Diva,” Nina said. “I was worried when I couldn’t wake her up.” He nodded and smiled, then sent me a final frown before letting himself out. The witch didn’t follow him, which meant she had some gossip to share.

“What’s new?” I asked, pushing the half-unread book aside.

Nina perched on the edge of one of the chairs, eyes alight with fresh news. “I heard a rumor Liam Pentland has already chosen the witch he wants to marry.”

“Already?” I asked in surprise. “They haven’t even had the ball yet.”

“I know!” she said, clapping her hands in excitement. Flour sifted down to land on her apron. “He apparently made the decision after the Pentlands’ pre-Halloween party.”

Alarm bells rang in my head and Jess’ mouth dropped open.
